3rd grade Unit of Inquiry（UOI） Class
Hello! I’m Ruby, an ALT from Australia working at Kaichi Nozomi as a part of the JET programme.
I teach art class to grades 1 through 4, and English to grade 6, but my main class is 3D. This semester I have been helping Sakamoto-sensei teach English UOI to 3D everyday. My main function in class is to support the students’ understanding, as this class is conducted almost entirely in English.
The central idea we have been discussing this semester is, “We can express messages through various methods”. We have been using the Key concepts Form, Function and Responsibility to help the students understand how messages are expressed, why they are expressed and also who is responsible for the content of the messages being expressed.
The aim of the central idea is to get the students to start thinking critically about the messages that exist within the media and the world around them. The project goal that we are working towards is for the students to construct a story that will express a message.
In class we have just started discussing with students the building blocks for constructing a story. This class is full of intelligent and creative students and I’m very excited to see what kind of stories and messages they will produce!
