Creative Woodworking in Grade 3 Art

Hello!

I’m Ruby and I’m working at Kaichi Nozomi as an Assistant Teacher. One of my favourite responsibilities in this job is help the art department leader (Ms. Abe) run art class in English. I teach art to various classes in grades 1 through 4, but today we’ll be talking about the project for grade 3!

We are working from the textbook and trying to develop the students fine motor skills, time-management and ability to plan ahead. In previous weeks we showed the students a safety demonstration about using the saw and carefully monitored their progress as they worked in pairs to chop up the wood provided in their craft kits.

When every student was satisfied with the number of pieces of wood they cut, they were allowed to move on to sanding. The sanding can become very time consuming if the student cut their wood haphazardly, so sometimes friends have to help out!

Once the sanding process is finished the student can start building their design! The only rule is that students must use all of the wood in their craft kit, so that nothing is wasted. When the students have considered how best to use all the pieces of wood in their design, then they can start glueing all the pieces together.

The final stage of this project is the decoration stage, but this class is still mostly in the sanding and glueing stage. This project is very stimulating and also very challenging for the students, they are tasked to consider the safety of themselves and their classmates, and also the design and construction of their creation. It might seem a lot for a third grade class but these kids are always up for a challenge. I can’t wait to see what they put together at the end of this project!
