Halloween Party
Hello, my name is Ruby and I’m an ALT from Australia.
Last weekend we finally had our school Halloween party! The Halloween party was organised by the PYP English department and held on Saturday the 5th of November. Halloween is an exciting time of year for Nozomi students, and we have been preparing for this event in class for several weeks.

In art classes, each grade level worked on different Halloween projects for the party. The first grade art project was a pumpkin costume, made from a large, orange plastic bag. The students had to cut out holes for their arms and their head, and then attach facial features to mimic a jack-o’-lantern. The students were then encouraged to decorate their costumes with stickers, drawings and colourful tape.

The second graders were instructed on how to make halloween capes from black plastic bags for their art project. The bags were cut and an elastic string was threaded through the neck. Then the students decorated their capes extensively.

The third graders were tasked with creating a small pumpkin-shaped candy bag, reminiscent of the kind of bags children carry when trick-or-treating. The students used paper cups and poster paper, and then decorated each bag freely.

The photo above also displays the fourth grade art project, which was pumpkin hats. Similar to the candy bag, the pumpkin hats were made with poster paper, and some children went ahead and made a lid for their pumpkin hat using a paper plate and a paper cup, imitating the stalk of the pumpkin. Many students decided to supplement these art projects with other costume items they had brought from home.
Other preparations for the Halloween party included teaching the students a Halloween song, which the students sang at the start of the party, and also preparing the party activity worksheet.
Completing the worksheet took up the majority of time for the party. The students were divided into groups and needed to approach teachers in these groups to be asked the questions on the worksheets. Every grade level had a different worksheet, and once each student answered each question a teacher gave them the corresponding Secret Letter. By putting all the different worksheets together they could answer the riddle.

When you combined the worksheets from grade 1 through to grade 5, the secret letters spelled out “Congratulations”. Box 1 on the worksheet above had the secret letter C, box 2: O, box 3:N and so on.
The students all seemed to have a great time dressed up in their Halloween costumes, working together in groups to solve this English puzzle. They also loved seeing all of the teachers dressed up in costumes as well.

We’re already looking forward to next year and thinking about ways to make this event even more engaging and enjoyable for the students. Thanks for reading!
