Things to EAT
Hello! I’m Ruby, an English teacher from Australia. This year I am lucky enough to teach English to Grade 3 classes A, B and E.
Right now Grade 3 is working on Everybody Up 3 – Unit 1 “Things to Eat”. Sometimes it can be difficult to teach this topic in the morning because everyone is still hungry, but we have been able to make good progress on the formative assessments for this unit – doing presentations.
In my classes we decided to use our iPads for this project, as the students are always excited to learn new skills and work with technology in the classroom.
The requirement for this project was for each student to work with Google Slides and create a presentation about a meal they wanted to make, and then explain the ingredients. We are using the grammar taught in this unit to explain what each student wants and what they need in the context of a recipe.
We are working on the students ICT skills by trying to familiarise the students with presentation software (Google Slides) and teach them how to add images from their iPad. The students love to learn these new skills and it’s fantastic to watch their development in real time.
Once the students have finished making their slides, they are given time to practice their presentations with each other to prepare for presentation day!
