After learning the elements of a narrative text (story), the English UOI 1st graders showcased their storytelling abilities last week.
One by one, students shared their chosen story to their classmates. Some of the stories the students chose include The Little Red Riding Hood, The Three Little Pigs, and Momotaro the Peach Boy.
Beforehand, students were asked to outline their chosen story’s elements, which include the characters, plot, settings, and theme. To get used to how a linear plot works, the class focused on the parts of a plot this unit, particularly in the beginning, middle or rising events and ending or resolution.
Though students needed to get used to being read to, the 1st graders did their best in keeping their attention towards their classmates. This helps lengthen their attention span little by little while strengthening their English listening skills.
Ultimately, the 1st graders are expected to write their own story showcasing a significant life event at home or school towards the end of the school year – a big jump from what was expected of the previous year’s 1st graders.
After adopting a new textbook for selected UOI English students, the school aims to produce PYP students who have a deep love of reading and inclination towards writing different forms of creative texts.
