How can we make our schools better?
Hello! In UOI (Unit of Inquiry) class, students do their best in thinking, researching, and sharing their ideas, opinions, and knowledge entirely in English.
This past few weeks, the Grade 1 English UOI students have been inquiring into this Central Idea for their first-ever Unit 1:
“Schools can be better when everyone works together.”
In April, students explored their new school campus top learn what school is like and also interviewed the principal, staff, and teachers to find out what their roles are within the school.
Today, we checked the meaning of each keyword in the Central idea by unpacking. We questioned how we can make our class (school) better. Students shared their various ideas in English, such as cleaning the classroom, passing out the textbooks, and erasing the whiteboard after class. We also decided to make our class essential agreements.
We made sure that essential agreements are not rules from the teacher, but rather ideas that everyone shares and agrees to make this class better. Students thought about how they want to be treated inside the classroom and shared many interesting ideas to make our classroom safe, comfortable, and fun! Some of them suggested using some of the Learner Profiles, such as Caring and Communicator!
After a long but important discussion, we decided to have 2 essential agreements in our class. Students and teachers agree on how we will:
- Listen quietly to each other when someone is speaking.
- Be a Caring Communicator!
We took turns writing the essential agreements and stamped our hands with paint on a big yellow paper like an actual stamp!
Students are now doing their best to be Caring by listening quietly and actively to each other. Whenever we are not following the essential agreements, we also need to come back to them each time to think and reflect on what we can fix in our classroom.
